What is
Environmental Choice?

Environmental Choice is the brand name of the New Zealand Ecolabelling
Trust, which was initiated and endorsed by the New Zealand Government. The
"Environmental Choice" brand is used to recognise genuine moves by
manufacturers to reduce the environmental impacts of their products and
can only be used by manufacturers who have had a licence granted (after an
audit of their products and business operations) by the New Zealand
Ecolabelling Trust.
Environmental Choice
licences have
been awarded to companies in a wide variety of industries including
cleaning goods and detergents; carpets; plastics; oil; batteries and paper
goods

Government departments and organisations are giving priority to
organisations with an Environmental Choice licence.
Many consumers now include "environmentally friendly" as an important
component in their consideration set when making decisions.
The Environmental Choice label provides a credible and independent guide
for consumers and trade professionals who want to purchase products that
are better for the environment.

The Environmental Choice
labelling
achieved by FAS products is among the best in the world, according to a
global study commissioned by the British government.
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has
mapped and analysed worldwide standards and methods used for measuring
environmental sustainability of products.
Considering 207 standards, databases and product lists globally, the
research looked at the robustness of standards used for measuring
sustainability, the range of criteria applied, and the methodology used.
The study scored organisations for open and thorough consultation in
developing standards, the frequency of updating them, backing by
government, the strength of evidence collected for assessments, and the
use of whole-of-lifecycle considerations.
The report says Environmental Choice, which is initiated and endorsed by
the New Zealand Government, provides a credible and independent guide
across a range of different product types, for consumers who want to
purchase products with reduced environment impacts. It is one of the
international best practice standards to which national labelling schemes
should be referred.
